So, when is the best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda? It’s the first thing every first-time trekker types into Google. It needs an actual answer, not a cut-and-paste line from travel sites.
Here’s the honest version: You can trek Bwindi Impenetrable National Park all year round. Gorillas don’t migrate or hibernate, so any month is a good month to see them. But everything else depends on what season you choose. It affects trail difficulty and crowds, permit availability, photo quality, and the tone of your day. That’s the difference for some travelers between a good trip and a great one.
The Seasons in Uganda Made Simple
Uganda is on the equator, so it’s not really summer and winter like other places. It is based instead on two dry seasons and two wet seasons per year:
Dry seasons:
Extended dry season: June–August
Short dry season: December-February
Wet seasons:
Long rains: March – May
Short rains: October – November
One thing to know before you book: Bwindi is a rainforest. It rains all the time, even in the dry season. It just rains a bit less. Temperatures are constant all year round, with daytime highs from 20-25°C (68-77°F). Cool mornings can bring them down to about 10°C (50°F). So whatever month you decide to go, take a waterproof jacket. That advice does not change with the seasons.
Dry Season Gorilla Trekking: June-August and December-February
These months are preferred by most lodges and guides and with good reason.
High Season: June, July, August
It’s the golden window for gorilla trekking. Trails in Bwindi are steep, covered with roots, and become treacherous when wet. But the ground is harder for these three months. Mud is kept to a minimum, and your boots hold the solid ground, not slide through clay.
Additionally, visibility increases. There is less canopy moisture when rainfall is lower. When you get to your gorilla family, you’ll have clearer sightlines and better light for pictures.
Burunga Gorilla Lodge is located in Rushaga Sector, which is particularly advantageous. Compared to the northern parts of Bwindi, it is situated at a greater elevation. Therefore, after the ground dries up, its steep ridgelines become much more doable.
What is the catch? Everyone else is aware of this as well. Permits sell out early and lodge costs surge during Bwindi’s busiest months, June through August. Make reservations at least six months in advance. Make reservations much earlier for July and August in particular.
December and January: Trekking During the Festive Season
Conditions during the short dry season are comparable to those during the long one. You benefit from improved weather, drier paths, and pleasant hiking temps. Travelers who combine a trip to Uganda with plans for Christmas or New Year’s are best suited for December and January.
One of the nicest windows on the calendar is in early December. By then, the trails have dried out from the October–November storms. Additionally, the holiday permit rush hasn’t reached its peak yet.
February marks the end of the brief dry season. As the celebratory surge comes to a close, conditions remain favorable, and crowds diminish. Compared to January, obtaining permits becomes somewhat simpler.
Gorilla trekking during the wet season: March–May and October–November
Most guides get ambiguous at this point. This is my honest opinion.
The Long Rains in March, April, and May in Bwindi
The hardest trekking window of the year is right now. Trails become muddy after heavy rains, and steep areas quickly become slick. On the route, leeches appear. Even though rangers deal with them frequently and they are harmless, first-timers are nonetheless taken aback by them. Your journey into the park may also be slowed by uneven roads. Travel time from Kisoro to the briefing location may increase as a result.
For the majority of tourists, this is the most challenging time of year to hike, both physically and in terms of photos.
Nevertheless, some types of travelers adore it. This is a popular season for fit, prepared hikers who value isolation over comfort. The throng diminishes, and the woodland becomes incredibly lush. Obtaining permits becomes simple and frequently happens quickly. Some lodges even lower their prices. Furthermore, the gorillas themselves are completely unaware of the rain. Muddy boots and all, your hour with them feels equally amazing.
The brief rains in October and November
The lengthy rains become milder and shorter in October and November. Trails are still soggy, but the weather is not as bad as it was in April or May. The woodland retains its moisture.
September deserves its own mention here. It’s technically still part of the dry season’s tail. Trekkers often call it the hidden sweet spot. You get dry-season weather, wet-season crowd levels, and permits that land easier than in peak summer. If your schedule bends toward September, take it.

How About Photography?
The dry season is ideal if you value taking beautiful pictures. There is less mist on the forest floor, the light is crisper, and there is no umbrella vying for your hand space. The ideal months for gorilla activity, trail conditions, and light are July and August.
However, the rainy season has its own benefits. Dry-season photos seldom reflect the moodier, darker color you get. Imagine rain on leaves, mist in the canopy, and that bizarre Bwindi green beneath the clouds. It’s not worse; it’s different.
When to Purchase a Gorilla Trekking Permit
Make reservations at least six months in advance during the dry season (June–August, December–February). Make reservations even earlier for July and August.
Two to three months’ notice is usually sufficient during the wet season (March–May, October–November), though it never hurts to give advance warning.
Treat September as the dry season and reserve four to five months in advance. Its reputation as a sweet place is becoming widely known.
All licenses are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. The majority of lodges, including Burunga Gorilla Lodge, are able to manage the reservation procedure during your visit.
Our honest Suggestion
Complete adaptability? For the best comfort and photos, visit in June, July, or August. Or choose September for great weather and a lot fewer people.
Are you on a tight budget? Select March, November, or October. With wetter footwear and cheaper costs, you still get the same gorillas and an hour-long interaction.
Do you want the woodland all to yourself? Select either April or May. The route becomes more difficult, and there is actual rain. But it feels amazing to be standing almost alone amid one of the oldest woods on Earth.
The mountain gorilla never looks at your calendar when you go. In any case, that hour in the wilderness stops you cold. The narrative is simply altered by the season.
