Our Commitment to Sustainability

At Burunga Gorilla Lodge, sustainability isn’t just a principle but it’s the very foundation of who we are and how we operate. Nestled at the edge of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda’s Rushaga sector, we recognize that our presence in this unspoiled ecosystem comes with great responsibility.

We are committed to offering a luxurious and authentic experience that leaves a positive footprint on both the environment and the local communities that make this place so unique.

Eco-Friendly Lodge Design and Operations

Our lodge was thoughtfully built to harmonize with the surrounding landscape, using locally sourced materials and traditional craftsmanship. The architectural style reflects vernacular influences that blend seamlessly into the forest backdrop.

To minimize our ecological impact:

We use solar energy for lighting and water heating, reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

We encourage guests to use our refillable glass bottles to reduce single-use plastics.

We practice strict waste separation, organic composting, and responsible greywater disposal to protect the surrounding vegetation and soil.

We strive to keep our lodge low-density and quiet, to ensure minimal disruption to wildlife.

Supporting Biodiversity and Conservation

Being located just minutes from one of the most biodiverse rainforests in the world, we deeply value the flora and fauna that surround us especially the endangered mountain gorillas.

We actively support conservation in several ways:

A portion of our lodge revenue contributes to Bwindi conservation initiatives and gorilla permit sales, which fund anti-poaching and habitat protection efforts.

We offer eco-education to our guests and staff about the importance of gorilla conservation, forest protection, and sustainable tourism.

We discourage any activities that exploit wildlife and strictly adhere to Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) conservation regulations.

Empowering Local Communities

We believe that for conservation to succeed, local communities must benefit directly from tourism.

Burunga Gorilla Lodge is proud to employ over 95% local staff from the surrounding villages of Rushaga and Kisoro.

Source fresh produce, meat, and crafts from local farmers, artisans, and cooperatives.

Partner with community-based tourism initiatives such as Batwa cultural visits, guided walks, and traditional dance groups, ensuring cultural heritage is preserved and celebrated.

Support skills training and mentorship programs for youth interested in hospitality, guiding, and environmental stewardship.

“Travel with purpose. Stay with impact.”
